Ocular Head Posture
Ocular causes of an abnormal head posture
An ocular head posture happens when the patient unconsciously positions his head either tilted up or down or to the left or right so his vision is clear and supported.
Here are other causes:
Misaligned eyes
Crossed eyes or misaligned vision makes the patient adopt a position where the eyes are best aligned. Naturally, the person will move his head away from the weaker eye, which results in an unusual head position.
Wobbly eyes
Another reason for changing the head posture is when the patient has wobbly or rapidly moving eyes. When the person finds the best position that slows down his jerky eye movements, his head is more likely to remain in that position, tilted or turned. This area is called the null point, which provides a better vision for the patient.
Poor vision due to a lazy eye or refractive errors
When suffering from poor vision, a patient naturally turns his head closer to the object to see it more clearly. In some cases, only one eye has a clear vision so the part of the head with the weaker eye is turned away from the target object.
Droopy eyelid (ptosis)
A patient with a droopy eyelid sees better when his chin is tilted or elevated. When this condition is left untreated, the patient adopts the abnormal position of the head for a long time, which could trigger headaches and neck tension.
Risks of an abnormal head posture
Although patients are not directly encouraged to correct their ocular head posture (since the right way is to fix the underlying eye problem that is causing it), it is still important to become aware of the risks of keeping your head at an unusual angle.
Here are the effects of an abnormal head posture:
- Permanent muscle tension – tightening of your neck muscles, which is very uncomfortable
- Long-term headache and neck pain – experiencing pain that keeps coming back or never goes away
- Facial asymmetry – developing malformations on your facial bones, which eventually alters your physical appearance
